Just wondering, is college as much fun as people have said it was?? Is it better then high school?

Bones (10/6): It is about 10 million time better than high school, well at least for it was. Living in the dorms with all your friends is a blast. An awesome four years of my life. Bopper (10/6): best four years very!!!!!!!!!!! guitarjunky (10/7): I'll pass a few things along to you that one of my professors told me 31 years ago. One of the most principled, ethical men I've ever known, he was the finest teacher I've ever had and later became my mentor and friend. You're paying good money to get an education so make the very best of it. STUDY LIKE HELL, but don't forget to cut loose and enjoy yourself whenever you can. Soak up everything you can possibly learn, and then some. If an idea or concept or a maybe even a whole subject seems to be total nonsense today, take it and tuck it somewhere in the back of your mind anyway as you might have use for it someday. He constantly reminded us never to just memorize material but to take the extra time to learn it through and through. Remember that whatever you learn over the next 4 years (and they'll seem to fly by) has to serve you for at least 40 more years. He also told us not to have a job outside of school because school is a full time job in itself. That's the kind of stuff I wish I'd done alot more of when I was in school! I worked like a maniac (nights, weekends, etc.) to help pay my way through so I didn't have much free time. So when my stepdaughter started college I told her emphatically to have a grand old time in addition to studying hard. She eventually wanted a part time job but we told her that everything she earned was for her incidentals. My wife and I took care of everything else (tuition, books, car lease, insurance, etc.) I'm very thankful that we were able to do so. Her chief complaint now is that she's too tired to party all week like when she was back in college! Again, best wishes and good luck! He wanted us all to be able to enjoy college without having to work through it (except during the summers) and what an amazing gift that was. I call it a gift because I know it is not that common anymore with the price of tuitions. KP86 (10/11): College is great because it is an opportunity to get exposure to new views and ideas. Try to get into a program that includes overseas study. College should open your eyes to other cultures and ways of life. Even now, 13 years later I still think how lucky I was to go through it. Yes, the partying was fun, but so was the learning. You could see how it was going to benefit you in your future career. And for the record, I think going away to school made the difference for me. I could totally immerse myself in every aspect of my school, make new friends that last a lifetime, and really learn to love where I was living all on my own. And if I might say so, my college totally rocked. And I was lucky enough to go back with my husband six years later so he could get an MBA. Anonymous (11/2): College is amazing in many ways. And yes, it is definately better than high school. The biggest difference I've noticed is probably in the attitudes of the students. While popularity is a factor to some, most people have stopped caring about what their classmates think of them. It's a friendlier environment for the most part. Also, my studies interest me. (This is especially true the further you get into your major.) So it's not as boring and seemingly useless as some of the things you have to sit through in high school. Also, at my school I'm lucky enough to have amazing professors, several of whom I have had conversations outside of class with about things like my spiritual life. And they all know me by name. It's great to have that kind of relationship with your teachers. Furthermore, I party, but I have a respectable GPA (I don't attend a particularly easy school), and I consider myself literate. The important thing is balancing your time. So I think noadvertising over there needs to stop being so judgmental. Knowing someone parties tells you nothing. I've found that being open-minded and not passing judgement on people allows me to see people from a different perspective. I like it. It's always good to expand your understanding of others' situations, and that's nearly impossible to do if you cloud your opinion of them with petty judgements. vanescafe (11/15): Those who say high school was the best time of their life never went to college! occaeco (7/15): It's much better than highschool. When I went to college I forgot highschool altogether unfortunately the freedom tends to put a lot of us in a considerable amout of trouble one way or another. So keep your nose clean and stay focused in college or you will be there for a while if your family has the money or you won't finsish. I met a lot of good friends while going to school. I have a lot of memories and I wouldn't trade that for anything. I also learned a lot. If you're just going to party, your money is probably better spent elsewhere. If you actually want to learn, grow, and expand your horizons then I would definitely consider it. First off, everyone, or, at least MOST everyone who attends college are there by choice. College isn't public education like high school where thousands of angry kids are made to go whether they want to or not. Furthermore, in college you choose your path in education. Sure, you may still be responsible for general ed courses, but the electives are much more plentiful and completely up to you. Whether you prefer to choose electives in art, music, theater, sports, college offers so much! Plus, college helps ignorant people keep their heads out from places they don't belong! There is also a freedom and euphoric feeling that comes along with college. No, not because it's easier to score drugs on college campuses, but rather because when you're attending college, not only do you know you're bettering yourself--you know that you're contributing to something bigger than your own life. There's no other time in your life do you have the chance to try anything and everything without much to risk or lose. Once you graduate, you'll feel a lot more ready for the adult world. Things will throw you for a curve in the adult world, but just remember what you learned in college - both IN and OUT of the classroom. Make college the best four years of your life! dude12 (11/17): I'm graduating college in another month...was the best 5 1/2 years of my life so far. If I had it my way I would stay in school for another 10 years, but realities such as student loan debt and financial aid running out, and the simple fact that I will have all required credits completed are kind of forcing me to leave school and enter the dreaded real world.

noadvertising (10/10): It's interesting to me that all of the I agree - this rocks replies that promoted partying are the worst written! Anyone who has been through four or more legitimate years of college should at least be able to spell and capitalize. I know some kids use text mode for all correspondence, but it's pure laziness and many use it because they don't even know proper grammar and writing standards. Sure-- party your way through college so you can remain illiterate and skim through without breaking a brain sweat. Hopefully your parents are wiser than you sound. I just didn't FOCUS on partying in college, knowing that I had a limited amount of money and time to spend educating myself. (Yes, I [gasp!]even had to work to support myself while I was in school.) I'm suggesting to the poster that the main purpose of college is to get an education--not to party. She'll have the rest of her life to party if she so chooses. She'll have a limited time in school in which to learn. Do you honestly think it's wrong to focus on your education for four years so you can make the most of your life? By putting the hard work in up front, she'll reap the benefits of a higher salary, more interesting jobs, and respect for herself for the rest of her life. It seems a lot of kids in their teens and early twenties don't want to work for anything. It's easier to scuff off and wait for their inheritances. It'll be the generation that never grows up. Brownie21 (12/18): don't waste your time and money. Go to a community college in your local area, then transfer the credits once you decide what you're interested in doing. Don't burden yourself with thousands of dollars of debt just to party for a few years before you drop out. Am I speaking from experience? Maybe. A group of us hired a pirate taxi to take us to college. We started at the crack of dawn, catered our meals, and finished each day on the campus at 7 p.m. You see, we were the non residents, not eligible to stay in colleges because we were locals. College didn't rock but it didn't suck either. There were good times but there were plenty of lonely times too. Anonymous (1/18): For all the people that say college is the best years of their lives, and they would give anything to relive their college experience, it's because they never did anything in college to set themselves up for the real world, they just partied all the time. Sure it was fun while they were there, but now they hate their jobs, their spouses and the place they live in. Think about it, if the best years of your life end in your early twenties, most of your life will be miserable. I think it's better to spend four years not having fun if it means your setting yourself up for a happy adulthood than having a blast in college and spending the rest of your life regretting that you never applied yourself. Either way you should be going to the best school you could get into so it should be just as hard for you even if you couldnt get into a very good school. Anyways for me college is study all day every day except friday and half of saturday. Most people choose to spend that time getting really drunk. College isnt what i expected i have no free time and i thought i would have alot of free time for clubs and doing various things but thats not the case. You dont have time for friends or doing anything you enjoy you just work constantly. Its kind of depressing really and extremley frusterating. All this talk about taking random road trips and shit wtf. That would never be possible for me or in my mind anyone who didnt just decide to go to a shitty party school. The olny real brightside is im not living at home anymore, in almost every other respect High school was better. HS had more friends, free time, classes werent so hard, and more things i could actually participate in.
